This is the first product I have ever written a review for. I looked for a Down Insulator for nearly 6 months. I wanted something that had both form and function. Had to be light, svelte, and warm. This jacket hits all the marks with an A+ ...and had I have to confess that that i have never owned a Helly Hansen product, but always heard great things about their commitment to quality and design. This jacket has accommodated all the deficiencies of my Patagonia down zip sweater. First and foremost I had always wished that the Patagonia had a higher collar. (There is a tremendous loose of heat through the neck, and that should be a priority in any jacket) This collar has been thoughtfully designed; high, but angled slightly toward the chin. Second, unlike the Verglas, the Patagonia has no fleece where it counts. ( in the hand pockets and on the inside of the zipper, to avoid chaffing) Additionally, the Verglas is what I would say has an athletic,"smart"cut. What that means to me is that the arm holes are smaller than the Patagonia, yet the shoulders still allow for full range of motion with arm length that will not ride up at the wrists in full extension. The slight increased length towards the lower back of the Verglass assures that it will not "ride-up" like the Patagonia can as well. Draw cords keep the heat in. Finally, the quality of the down is higher than the Patagonia, down always sheds and the quality of the Down coming out of the HH is softer and smaller. (i.e. better insulator)
I use this jacket by itself down to 30 and with a shell and a strong base layer you are good for any winter sport. This jacket fits perfectly; I don't even know it's there.. (snug, but not tight) I am 6' 170 lbs and the medium is a perfect fit.
