J & M Flap Over Briefcase Color: Black Tumbled Review

I'm a bit of a road warrior and in the past few years I've noticed that due to laptops getting so much thinner & lighter, hard drives and thumb drives getting so much larger, and the fact that I'm storing much of my data to the cloud now, that I'm carrying a lot less around with me than I used to. Therefore my Tumi backpack (which I absolutely LOVE) has much more vacant space in it nowadays than it used to. So, I decided it was time to downsize my bag.

I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to bags. I've been using Tumi bags exclusively for about 7 years. Every now and then I'll try something else but it never lasts for more than a week before a fall back to my trusty Tumi. This time around I decided that I wanted to switch from a backpack to a flap-over style leather shoulder bag. The Tumi's that I looked at were in the $700-$800 range which is more than I can justify. However, those Tumi's are gorgeous bags. So I searched for a long time hoping to find something as visually appealing and well made as the Tumi's, yet without the Tumi sticker shock. And for a long time my search came up empty. But when I saw this Johnston & Murphy bag I was immediately optimistic.

The photos of this bag looked great but I was hesitant to spend this much without seeing it firsthand so I called my local J&M store and luckily they had one in stock so I went down to check it out. Pictures and words do not do justice to how gorgeous this bag is. This is a bag that people notice. If you buy this bag, expect strangers in airports, subways, hotels, etc. to approach you and say "whoa, that's a nice bag!".

The dark mahogany version and the black tumbled version are functionally the same bag and they're both beautiful, yet the brown bag is made of stiffer leather and in my opinion is a sharper bag, and is the one I bought.

The bag is actually slightly smaller (thinner) than I expected it to be, and to be honest since I was coming from a large backpack I was concerned the J&M wouldn't be large enough. But I took a chance and as it turns out, the J&M is laid out very well and big enough for my essentials. In the laptop compartment I have a 13" Samsung Series 9 laptop, in the main compartment I have a large "Grid-It" organizer that holds all my accessories and the main compartment still has room for my Samsung slate (or a paper notebook or files if that's how you roll). The front pockets are great for all my miscellaneous accessories, glasses case, business cards, etc. There are a couple of internal zippered pockets and then the rear pocket which has a dedicated pocket inside of it, so when you unzip the bottom to slide it over your roller suitcase, there's still a pocket in there to store your stuff in.

The bottom line is if you are in the market for a great looking, well organized, leather bag, look no further. I cannot stress how beautiful this bag is. I've had it for 2 weeks and just looking at it still makes me smile. It's a pleasure to use and carry.
