The North Face Crestone 75 Internal Frame Pack Review

There's a bunch of things that I love about this bag; it really is a high quality product. Its very roomy, very comfortable, very durable, looks good, and ultimately great for long backpacking trips. It has a few different storage compartments which allow you to pack and access the bag in a few different ways, put the weight where it needs to be, etc. It's adjustable torso (adjustable shoulder strap height) works very well, is relatively easy to adjust, and stays in position once locked it. I love that I haven't really had to re-adjust it or retighten it, even after several trips. The shoulder, waist, and back padding is very comfortable and breathable. I haven't had any problems with chaffing with this bag.

There are just a couple of areas that leave me wanting more. I'd love it if it had a couple more pockets or pouches built onto the outside of the bag. There's really only the one medium size shovel pocket on the outside, and I wind up putting everything small in there. Just gets annoying to have to dig through everything anytime I want to grab something out of there. This really isn't a deal breaker though. My other gripe is that although the torso length (shoulder pad height) is very adjustable, and has a great range, the height of the load-lifter straps (on top of the shoulder pads) is not adjustable. I'm taller, at 6'1", and where I've got my shoulder pads set, the load lifter straps are between 0 and 15 degrees to the frame, where they really should be more like 45 degrees. Although things still seem to adjust comfortably, I feel like If they were adjustable, and I was able to get a steeper angle with them, I'd be able to pull the top of the pack in more and ultimately be even more comfortable.

This is my first internal frame, I'm coming from a Kelty Trekker external frame. I like the ultimate adjustability and packability of the externals. I felt like I could really adjust every single fit-feature on them. Although this internal is SLIGHTLY less adjustable, it's still very customizable, and very, very comfortable. On my external, if it wasn't adjusted/fit just right, I wouldn't be comfortable. But on this internal, I find that I'm almost always comfortable, even on the days where I don't have things packed ideally, or while I'm experimenting with adjustments.

Bottom line, this is a great bag, and using it is one of my favorite parts of getting out onto the trails. I'd say that its perfect for most people, though if you're taller than me (6'1") and you are picky about the load lifters, that is really the only area with potential for disappointment. If you're shorter than me, that issue would be irrelevant. I haven't run across another bag in stores yet that I'd rather own than this one.
