They work by splitting a layer of insulation down the middle of the glove, resulting in two pockets in which to put your hand. The two pockets are basically a compromise on both, with neither being all that warm. In the "warm" pocket, the outside seems to be lacking insulation, resulting in cold fingers. In the "grip" pocket, the palm lacks insulation. I actually think the grip pocket is warmer overall if you have something in your hand like a shovel. In mild (30s/40s) weather they work adequately, but in colder weather they don't. I also have their Annapurna mittens, which is ridiculously warm but you lose virtually any use of your hands with them on.

I'll give them 3 stars because they seem well built and are waterproof, but they are not all that warm for the price.
